Home battery and Octopus Energy: tariffs, Nook and compatibility
Octopus Energy has several separate pieces of the home battery puzzle. Octopus Flux is designed for solar and battery owners and publishes cheap and peak periods. Intelligent Octopus Go is primarily an EV tariff with a whole-home off-peak window. Octopus Nook is an announced battery range, including a 2 kWh socket-plugged Cube for renters and apartments, planned for UK availability from 2027. Check eligibility and product control rather than assuming any Octopus tariff will automate your battery.[7][8][11][12]
Start with the right Octopus question
"Octopus battery" can mean three different things: a tariff, a battery product or software that controls charging. These should be checked separately. A cheap import window is only useful if your battery can charge in it, your home can use the stored energy later and the tariff's eligibility rules fit your meter.
Energy Saving Trust says batteries can store excess solar or cheap electricity for later, but the saving depends on the home and will not always justify the battery cost.[1][2]
Octopus Flux for solar and batteries
Octopus Flux is the current Octopus page most directly aimed at solar and battery owners. Octopus describes it as an import and export tariff with cheap rates from 02:00 to 05:00 and a peak period from 16:00 to 19:00. It says customers should generally charge in the cheap period and discharge in the peak period.[7]
Flux requires solar, a home battery, a smart meter that can provide half-hourly readings, and Octopus import and export arrangements. The tariff is flexible, so today's rate pattern is not a permanent payback guarantee.[7]
Intelligent Octopus Go is not a battery product
Intelligent Octopus Go is primarily an EV tariff. Its official page describes smart charging for eligible cars or chargers and up to six hours of off-peak electricity for the whole home between 23:30 and 05:30. Eligibility is not the same as proving that a standalone home battery can be controlled by Octopus.[8][10]
If you have an EV and a home battery, test the interaction rather than assuming the result. Octopus explains that a home battery can interpret EV charging as household demand and discharge into it. The suggested fixes include changing the CT clamp arrangement with an electrician or pausing the battery in its app.[9]
What Octopus Nook changes
Octopus Nook is the product side of the story. The Nook Cube is announced as a shoebox-sized 2 kWh battery for renters and apartment dwellers, with extra Cubes stackable up to 10.5 kWh and app control. Octopus says the range is compatible with solar and smart tariffs.[11]
The launch announcement says customers will be able to get the range in the UK from next year, meaning 2027 based on the 22 June 2026 announcement. Price, final delivery dates and the complete UK paperwork still need checking when sales open.[12]
Can Octopus work without solar?
A grid-charged battery without solar can use a cheap-rate window, but it still pays for every kWh imported and loses energy in the round trip. That makes the rate spread, usable size, control quality and evening demand more important than the supplier name.

Compatibility checks before switching
Before switching, check the smart meter type and whether half-hourly readings are available, whether the battery can follow a schedule, whether the app exposes charge and discharge limits, and whether export is supported. For Flux, Octopus lists solar, a battery, an export MPAN and compatible smart-meter readings as part of the route.[7]
For Intelligent Octopus Go, confirm the compatible car or charger first. Then ask the battery installer how the CT clamp, EV charger and battery will see each other. A tariff that is excellent for an EV can behave differently when a battery is also trying to protect the home load.[8][9]
Our Octopus verdict
Choose Flux when you have the required solar, battery, export and smart-meter setup and are comfortable checking flexible rates. Choose Intelligent Octopus Go when your priority is an eligible EV or charger and you have tested the battery interaction. Treat Nook as a product to monitor until the promised UK launch details are published.
There is no universal "best Octopus tariff for a battery". The right answer is the one whose eligibility, control path and rate spread match your actual equipment and routine.
