Plug-in home battery vs portable power station
A portable power station is a battery box with its own plug sockets: you plug appliances into it. A plug-in home battery aims to work with your home's energy — charging on cheap power and paying out later. The advert's label proves nothing; follow the actual path the power takes and the maker's UK instructions.
Portable power station
A portable power station packs battery cells, an inverter and plug sockets into one box you can carry. Charge it from the grid or solar, then plug appliances straight into it. Handy for camping, sheds, backup for a few essentials, and temporary power.
Its limit: running an appliance from the box is not the same as powering your house wiring. Never join a socket to a socket with a DIY cable, and never feed power backwards into a circuit.
Plug-in home battery
A plug-in home battery is sold around easier home storage: charge from a normal socket, follow a cheap tariff automatically, and use the stored power later. Some have their own appliance sockets; others claim a deeper link with your home.
Those designs are not interchangeable. The closer a product gets to feeding your house wiring or the grid, the more its exact electrics, instructions and grid requirements matter.
Fixed home battery
A conventional fixed battery is part of a professionally designed installation: matched inverter or gateway, fixed wiring, safety gear, commissioning, and the proper building and grid-company process.
It costs more to install. In return you can get higher output, bigger size, better integration and proper backup in a power cut. Don't judge it against a small portable box on price per kWh alone.
The questions to ask
- Where does stored power come out: the box's own sockets, a dedicated circuit, or a household socket?
- In a power cut, what keeps running — and what doesn't?
- Does it feed power into your home wiring or the grid?
- What are the UK installation, notification and permission steps?
- Is the advertised size actually usable, and what output can it hold?
These questions beat any advert slogan with “plug-in”, “plug-and-play” or “solar battery” in the title.
Questions people ask
Can I plug a portable power station into a wall socket to power my home?
Don't — unless the maker documents exactly that setup with proper transfer equipment fitted by a professional. A cable joining two sockets is dangerous and can kill a grid engineer working outside.
Does a portable power station count as a home battery?
It stores energy, but it is not automatically a home battery. What counts is how it connects to your home and what it is built to do — not just how many kWh it holds.
Which option is best for a flat or rented home?
A portable unit or a genuinely approved compact battery can be easier than a fixed system. But weight, fire safety, landlord permission, noise, where it lives and how power gets in and out still decide whether it works for you.
